What is RPI?
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is a metric that ranks sports teams by combining their winning percentage with the strength of their schedule. It accounts for not just how often a team wins, but how challenging their opponents were, providing a fuller picture of team performance.
How to Calculate RPI
[\text{RPI} = 0.25 \times W + 0.5 \times O + 0.25 \times P]
Where:
- W is the team winning percentage.
- O is the opponents' winning percentage.
- P is the opponents' opponents' winning percentage.
All values are entered as percentages (e.g., 80 for 80%).
Calculation Example
A team has an 80% winning percentage, their opponents average 65%, and their opponents' opponents average 45%.
[\text{RPI} = 0.25 \times 80 + 0.5 \times 65 + 0.25 \times 45]
Step by step:
- 0.25 x 80 = 20
- 0.5 x 65 = 32.5
- 0.25 x 45 = 11.25
- 20 + 32.5 + 11.25 = 63.75
The RPI is 63.75.
