The rod ratio is the ratio of the connecting rod length to the crankshaft stroke length in an engine. It is a key metric for engine builders and performance enthusiasts because it directly affects piston dynamics, cylinder wall loading, and overall engine efficiency.

How to Calculate Rod Ratio

Here is the formula:

  • Rod Length is the center-to-center length of the connecting rod.
  • Stroke Length is the crankshaft stroke distance.

An engine has a connecting rod length of 6 inches and a crankshaft stroke of 4 inches.

The rod ratio is 1.5. This is a common ratio for many production engines. A ratio of 1.75 or higher is typical of high-performance or racing engines.

A higher rod ratio reduces the angle at which the connecting rod pushes against the cylinder wall, decreasing friction and wear. It also increases piston dwell time near top dead center, giving more time for combustion pressure to build before the piston moves down.

The rod ratio is a dimensionless number because it is the ratio of two lengths. Whether you measure in inches or millimeters, the units cancel out in the division. A 6-inch rod with a 4-inch stroke gives the same ratio as 152.4 mm with 101.6 mm.

In theory, a very high rod ratio is beneficial, but practical constraints limit it. A longer rod requires a taller engine block, which increases weight and packaging challenges. Most engines balance rod ratio with physical space constraints.
