What is Reverse BMI and Why Should You Care?

Reverse BMI allows you to find your ideal weight based on your height and desired BMI. Instead of calculating BMI from weight and height, it works backward to pinpoint the weight you need to achieve your fitness goals.

How to Calculate Reverse BMI

Imperial Formula (inches and pounds)

[\text{Weight} = \frac{\text{BMI} \times \text{Height}^{2}}{703}]

Where:

  • Weight is your ideal weight in pounds.
  • BMI is your target body mass index.
  • Height is your height in inches.

Metric Formula (centimeters and kilograms)

[\text{Weight} = \text{BMI} \times \left(\frac{\text{Height}}{100}\right)^{2}]

Where:

  • Weight is your ideal weight in kilograms.
  • BMI is your target body mass index.
  • Height is your height in centimeters.

Calculation Example

Using the Imperial Formula

For a height of 70 inches and a target BMI of 22:

[\text{Weight} = \frac{22 \times 70^{2}}{703}]

[\text{Weight} = \frac{22 \times 4{,}900}{703} \approx 153.34]

Your ideal weight is approximately 153.34 lbs.

Using the Metric Formula

For a height of 178 cm and a target BMI of 22:

[\text{Weight} = 22 \times \left(\frac{178}{100}\right)^{2}]

[\text{Weight} = 22 \times 3.1684 \approx 69.70]

Your ideal weight is approximately 69.70 kg.

No. BMI is a simple ratio of weight to height and does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without being overweight.

For inches, it uses Weight = BMI x Height² / 703 to get pounds. For centimeters, it uses Weight = BMI x (Height/100)² to get kilograms.
