What is a Double Discount Calculator?
A Double Discount Calculator helps you determine the final price of an item after applying two successive discounts. This is commonly used in retail sales where items may have multiple promotional discounts applied sequentially.
How to Use the Double Discount Calculator
- Enter the initial price of the item in dollars
- Enter the first discount percentage
- Enter the second discount percentage
- Click "Calculate" to see the final price
Understanding Double Discounts
When two discounts are applied successively, they don't simply add together. Instead, the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price from the first discount.
Formula
The calculation follows these steps:
- Price after first discount = Initial Price - (Initial Price x First Discount)
- Final Price = Price after first discount - (Price after first discount x Second Discount)
Example Calculation
Let's calculate the final price for an item with two discounts:
- Initial Price: 200 dollars
- First Discount: 20 percent
- Second Discount: 15 percent
Step 1: Apply first discount
- Price after first discount = 200 - (200 x 0.20) = 200 - 40 = 160
Step 2: Apply second discount to the reduced price
- Final Price = 160 - (160 x 0.15) = 160 - 24 = 136
The final price is 136 dollars.
Important Note
A 20 percent discount followed by a 15 percent discount is not the same as a 35 percent discount. In our example, a straight 35 percent discount would give 130, but successive discounts of 20 percent and 15 percent result in 136.
