What is Dock Weight and Why Should You Care?
Understanding dock weight is important for knowing how much weight your dock can actually support.
How to Calculate Dock Weight
The formula:
$$DW = \frac{L}{12} \times \frac{W}{12} \times \frac{T}{12} \times N \times 62.4$$
Where:
- L is the length of each individual float (in inches)
- W is the width of each individual float (in inches)
- T is the thickness of each individual float (in inches)
- N is the total number of floats used
- 62.4 is the density of water in lbs/ft cubed
Calculation Example
- Length of Float: 30 inches
- Width of Float: 14 inches
- Thickness of Float: 8 inches
- Number of Floats: 15
$$DW = \frac{30}{12} \times \frac{14}{12} \times \frac{8}{12} \times 15 \times 62.4$$
$$DW = 2.5 \times 1.1667 \times 0.6667 \times 15 \times 62.4$$
$$DW = 1{,}820.00 \text{ lbs}$$
