How to Calculate Caster Weight

The caster weight formula divides total load by the number of casters:

$$\text{Weight per Caster} = \frac{W}{n}$$

Where:

  • W is the total weight
  • n is the number of casters

Example: A cart weighing 2,500 lb with 5 casters:

$$\text{Weight per Caster} = \frac{2{,}500}{5} = 500 \text{ lb}$$

Each caster supports 500 lb of the total load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Knowing the weight per caster helps you select casters with the appropriate load rating. Using undersized casters can lead to premature failure, difficulty rolling, and safety hazards.

Yes, it is recommended to select casters rated for at least 25-50% more than the calculated weight per caster to account for dynamic loads, uneven weight distribution, and shock loads.

In theory, yes, but in practice weight distribution can be uneven due to load placement, floor conditions, and cart design. Consider the worst-case scenario when selecting casters.
