What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a tool that lets you keep an eye on your weight in relation to your height. BMI aims to give you an idea of whether you're in a healthy weight range. It categorizes you as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

Formula

In Imperial Units:

[\text{BMI} = \frac{703 \times \text{Weight (lbs)}}{\text{Height (in)}^2}]

In Metric Units:

[\text{BMI} = \frac{\text{Weight (kg)}}{\text{Height (m)}^2}]

Example in Imperial Units

  • Height: 65 inches
  • Weight: 150 pounds

[\text{BMI} = \frac{703 \times 150}{65^2} = \frac{105450}{4225} \approx 24.96]

Example in Metric Units

  • Height: 1.65 meters (165 cm)
  • Weight: 68 kilograms

[\text{BMI} = \frac{68}{1.65^2} = \frac{68}{2.7225} \approx 24.98]
